Millionaire Mindset in Uncertain Times

We’re living in very weird times. The job market was at all-time highs and people were quitting their jobs to find better opportunities; now people are finding themselves laid off with little to no notice. There was a booming demand for housing, with people fighting over homes with cash; fast-forward to today when homes sit on the market, holding empty weekend open house showings. People were competing over toilet paper; now they’re competing over who gets to watch the ballot boxes. We’re being warned of impending economic recession by everyone from the UN to the pundits on YouTube.

Like I said, weird times. How do we stay sane and cultivate a millionaire mindset, whether that’s towards our finances, our employment, or our access to things we used to take for granted (hello, ongoing supply chain issues)? Here are a couple things that help me maintain balance, please comment below with habits that work for you!

1. Meditation. I try to meditate daily and it really helps keep me grounded and centered. I wasn’t really sold on a daily meditation practice until I saw Ray Dalio crediting it with a large part of his success, but it makes total sense. If you’re able to “get out of the blizzard” (as he puts it) of the chaos of daily life and rise above all that to a place where you can see and think clearly, it ups your chances of making good decisions in all areas of your life. Vishen Lakhiani and the works of the late Zen Master Thich Naht Hanh are good places to start if you’re discovering meditation for the first time.

2. Organization. Staying organized and on top of things helps me feel calm and collected regardless of what else is going on in the world. For me, this includes tracking expenses in my monthly budget and making adjustments to account for inflation as-needed; keeping my home and the space around me clean and clutter-free (as much as possible, anyway…I’ve been doing a lot of decluttering and donating gently-used items, it really feels great); and planning things in advance so stuff doesn’t turn into an unnecessary emergency. Even little habits like keeping the gas tank in my car topped up or scheduling routine medical appointments really makes a world of difference for my peace of mind.

3. Avoiding the 24/7 news cycle. Let’s be honest, the global news is pretty awful right now. And I’d say we’re all a bit shell-shocked after two years of a global pandemic and a whole lot of unrest and turmoil in the meantime, particularly in the US. While I like to keep informed, there’s a fine line between knowing you need to know and going into a tailspin of doom scrolling. I like to follow the financial market news…and that’s about it. If it’s relevant to my business, I’ll read it. If not, I won’t. After spending most of 2020 wasting a lot of time immersed in the truly traumatic media, I came out a lot worse for the wear and learned from that painful experience that the 24/7 news cycle of doom and gloom just isn’t a healthy place to live. Good things happen each and every day across the globe…but you’d never know it from reading the news.
